The West Indian Bible: A Commentary on West Indian Proverbs
The West Indian Bible is a collection of proverbs or sayings that became the unspoken moral code that enhanced life and business being conducted in the British Caribbean colonies. Much of these proverbs owe their origin to the former African slave community. Upon emancipation the majority of freed slaves moved out of the sugar plantations and settled in villages. In time other ethnic groups would join them and the emerging multi-cultural communities would benefit mutually from each other’s wisdom and experience.
In this book the author examines close to 100 proverbs, offers an English transliteration of each proverb, and then matches the moral lesson of the proverb with famous quotes, from secular and biblical sources, after which he provides a brief commentary on the proverb. The correspondence of these venerable sayings with secular and biblical authority serves to validate the moral efficiency of ancient wisdom and it is hoped that this brief work will keep those maxims alive for generations to come.
